McDONOUGH – John R. Preston, 82, of McDonough, passed away on April 25, 2011 of natural causes in Hopkinsville, Ky. He was born Aug. 26, 1928, the son of Gerald L. Preston and Elizabeth Evans Preston.
John attended the McDonough Union School and graduated from Oxford Academy and Central High School in 1946. After graduating from California Polytechic University at San Luis Obisbo, Cal. in 1951, he entered the military and served in the Korean Conflict. Upon retirement from Farmer’s Home Administration - U.S.D.A. in 1988, he spent equal time living in Kentucky for the winter and on Geneganslet Lake, McDonough, in the summer enjoying socializing with friends and family, canoeing and swimming. His love of traveling included visiting in all but one of the 50 states (Alaska) and many countries.
John is survived by his wife Winifred L. Preston; a son David of Central Square; two daughters, Jennie Preston-Sabin of Hopkinsville, Ky., Dauna Sabin of Trenton, Ky.; two brothers, Douglas of Smithville Flats and Rodney of McDonough; also six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the McDonough Library or the McDonough Fire Department.
There will be a private memorial service for the family only.
