Albert Meyer


PRESTON – Albert Henry Meyer, 82, a longtime resident of Preston and well known mechanic and farmer passed away Tuesday morning, July 19, 2011, at his home in Preston.
Albert was born in Bismarck, N.D. in April of 1929, the son of John F. and Grietje Wessels Meyer. He grew up on the farm and moved to Preston from Oxford in the early 1950s. Albert worked his early years as a farmer and trucked milk and hay. Later in life he worked as a mechanic for R.D. Smith & Sons as well as Nuway Farm Supply. Al had also worked as a truck driver and equipment operator for BCA Enterprises.
Following his retirement, Albert still delivered newspapers, did mechanic work for his neighbors and also worked on his sisters farm. He was a former Town of Preston Assessor, a capacity which he held for about ten years. Albert was also a lifetime member of the Preston Fire Dept. and had served as Chief for several years.
In his spare time, he enjoyed a round of golf, a good game of pitch, horseshoes, fishing, gardening, bird watching, hunting and attending tractor pulls at the county fair.
Above all else, Al enjoyed spending time with his family at his home.
On May 20, 1951 in Norwich he married Laureen L. (Button) Meyer who passed away April 7, 2007.
Albert is survived by his children, Raymond (Ann) Meyer of Roanoke, VA, Ronald Meyer of Norwich, Stanley (Linda) Meyer of Plymouth, Marilyn (Gary) Marango of Norwich, Carolyn (Art) Powell of South Plymouth and Eileen (Gary) Miller of Sherburne, his sisters Agnes (Gerald) Rowe of Norwich, Louise (Thomas, Carle) Pike of Norwich, Lois (Lewis) Crandall of Florida, Arlene Carkhuff of Norwich and his brothers Harold (Shirley) Meyer of Florida and John Meyer of London, Ontario Canada. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his wife Laureen, Al was predeceased by his son Steven Meyer and granddaughter Stacey Ann Meyer.
Funeral services for Al will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeremy Stopford, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Earlville, will officiate. Interment will be in the J.D. Lewis Cemetery of Preston.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from noon to 2 and 5 to 7 p.m.
