PLYMOUTH – Mary E. Slater, 93, a life long resident of Plymouth, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, Sept. 20, 2011, in the Wilson Hospital of Johnson City.
Mary was born in Plymouth in April of 1918 the daughter of Andrew and Ruth Thornton Wilson. She grew up in the Plymouth area and attended school in North Norwich. Mary worked for a brief period of time as a practical nurse in the area taking care of the sick. On Oct. 3, 1941 she married Vern Slater who passed away July 8, 1996. From this point on Mary and Vern owned and operated their own farm in Plymouth for many years.
Mary was a woman who lived her life using the “old values.” Not afraid of an honest day’s work, she could often be seen working along with her husband in the fields on the farm. She expected you to toe the line and many times it was her way or hit the highway. A long time member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church, she had worked many of the church dinners and functions.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Laverna Miles of Norwich, Vernetta Moore and her husband William of Alabama; her grandchildren John Moore and his wife Karen of Camillus, James Miles of Norwich and Steven Miles and his wife Wendy of Liverpool. Also surviving are her great grandchildren Connor Moore, Sarah and Haley Miles and her niece and nephew Rosemary and Herb Crouch of Smyrna.
Besides her husband Vern, Mary was predeceased by her sister, Mae Crouch, her brother, William Wilson, and her son-in-law, Nelson Miles.
Funeral services for Mary will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. George Gallandorm, pastor of the Plymouth United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the South Side Cemetery of Plymouth.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11.
