ROME – Evelyn Rothdiener, 65, joined God on Nov. 16, 2011 in the comfort of her home with her loving family at her side.
She was born on May 8, 1946 in Albany, to the late Theodore and Mary Basarab Marks and was a graduate of Mt. Upton schools-an active athlete and leading student. She furthered her education at the Utica School of Commerce, where she made life long friends.
Evelyn’s family was started with Richard Hurlburt in 1966 and they had one son and four daughters.
On Dec. 29, 2004, Evelyn and Paul Rothdiener were joyously united in marriage and the family grew to include two step-daughters and their families. They spent the past 7 years sharing their life and love together.
For over 15 years she was employed as a teacher’s aide at Westmoreland Central School. In addition she was a recreational assistant for the A.R.C. of Oneida County.
While at Westmoreland, Evelyn was gifted to a position with a special student, Andy Richards – whom she loved, mentored and inspired throughout his years at Westmoreland.
Because of the time she spent with Andy, Evelyn was awarded a second high school diploma at Andy’s graduation. Her talents were also appreciated as an active and important member of the Westmoreland PTA for many years.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Rome.
Evelyn is survived by her beloved husband Paul, four daughters, one son, one daughter-in-law, two step-daughters, and five sons-in-law: Michele and Paul DiCarlo of Rochester, MN, Stephanie and Doug Commins of Villa Rica, GA, Jamie and Jason Frost of Lincoln, RI and Sharon Beasley of Rochester, Paul and Shirley Hurlburt of Liverpool, Theresa Rothdiener and Brian Smith of S. Utica and Cynthia and Ron Dittmar of Chadwicks. Her siblings (one sister and seven brothers): Susan and Ron Seidel of Chenango Forks, Theodore and Ellen Marks of Schoharie, James and Elizabeth Marks of Oxford, Christopher and Brenda Marks of Guilford, Peter and Theresa Marks of Mt. Upton, Paul and Pam Marks of Taylors, S.C., Michael Marks of Norwich, and Andrew and Diana Marks of Lafayette. In addition, Andy Richards, whom she loved dearly, as well as 12 beloved grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn joined her two nephews in Heaven: Casey Marks and Scott Miner.
Calling and rejoicing hours will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St. Sauquoit.
Evelyn’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 200 East Dominick St. in Rome.
Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Clayville.
Evelyn’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to either: United Cerebral Palsy or Hospice and Palliative Care. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
