Louise Swertfager


NORWICH – Louise A. Swertfager, 87, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford.
Born July 9, 1924 in Amblerville, Louise was the daughter of Eugene and Pearl (Knapp) Miller. She was raised on the family farm in South New Berlin and graduated from South New Berlin High School. Louise will be remembered as a hard worker at both the Colonia Theater and of the former Norwich Drive-in Theater. She was an avid bowler and a member of several leagues. She founded the Senior Bowling League and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Norwich Bowling Association for many years.
Louise loved animals all of her life, especially her dog, Skippy and her cat, Seven.
Louise was the widow of Hugh Swertfager. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Maryjane and Jeff Vorhies and Bonnie and Kevin Diefenbacher, all of Norwich and Sherie Lynn Warner of Binghamton; five grandchildren, Virginia Ostrom, Alan Hess and Eric Diefenbacher of Norwich and Clayton Ostrom of Eugene, Oregon and Barbara Fleming of Norwich. She is also survived by her brother, Charlie Brooks and his brothers, several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was predeceased by her brother, Wesley Miller and her sister, Theda Brooks.
 The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Unit 2 at Gilmour/Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and also the staff in the Maple Neighborhood of the NYS Veterans’ Home.
A celebration of life for Louise will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Neil Bendixen, pastor of the Canasawacta Valley Free Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in New Berlin. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
