Calvin Astalos


GUILFORD – Calvin “Butch” Frederick Astalos Sr., 62, of Guilford, went to eternal peace on Saturday, March 24, 2012 in the Wilson Regional Medical Center of Johnson City surrounded by his family.
Butch was born on Dec. 22, 1949 in Elizabeth, N.J., the son of George and Marion Wetzel Astalos. He grew up in Piscataway, N.J. where he attended the local schools. A veteran of the United States Army, Butch served his country during the Vietnam War from May of 1970 until his honorable discharge in January of 1972. On Nov. 10, 1977 in New Jersey, he married Toni Gatlin, who survives. Butch has worked for the past 15 plus years for the Baille Lumber Co. in Smyrna as an inventory specialist.
Butch was an avid fisherman and spent many weekends throwing a line in the river with his sons, grandchildren and good friends and always had a good tale to tell. He also enjoyed the fall and winter months where he could enjoy the woods hunting small game and deer.
Butch is survived by his wife Toni of Guilford; his mother Marion Astalos of Piscataway, N.J.; his children Calvin Astalos Jr. and wife Dannett of Beckley, West Virginia, Jeremy Astalos and wife Kristal of Mt. Upton and George Astalos and wife Melissa of Gilbertsville. Also surviving are his sisters Barbara Fasano and husband Louis of Brick, N.J., Karen Carmody and husband Billy of Branchburg, N.J., Kathleen Gard and husband John of Heath, Ohio; his brothers Thomas and Gary Astalos of Piscataway, N.J.; and his grandchildren Jonathan Astalos, Kayla Astalos, Savannah Astalos, Adirianna Astalos of Beckley, W.Va., Shiane Astalos of Guilford, Naikia West, McKenna Astalos and Jeremy Astalos of Mt. Upton and Madeline Astalos of Gilbertsville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Butch was predeceased by his father George, his sister Linda Reed, his brother George Jr. and his granddaughter Shauna Astalos.
Funeral services for Butch will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Ted Lawrence, pastor of the West Smyrna Baptist Church, will officiate.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service at 5 p.m.
