NORWICH – Douglas R. Hoag, 81, of Norwich, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012 at his home with his family by his side.
Doug was born in Oxford on July 31, 1930, the son of P. Ray and Bessie Adelaide Cating Hoag. A resident of Oxford, East Pharsalia and Norwich for all of his life, Doug and his wife have made their home on “the hill” for 24 years.
Doug was a man of all trades working first for Hart’s Electric and then the New York State Veterans Home as an electrician for 20 plus years. In his spare time Doug and his wife were very involved for 16 years with the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Program. Over the years they had raised over 400 dogs in Chenango County and he was the county leader and instructor for the program. Doug also ran the 4-H dog obedience program.
Doug also enjoyed the outdoors. He liked his fishing, hunting, boating, waterskiing and traveling with his wife in their RV motor home. He wa also an avid HO train collector.
On April 26, 1952 in Washington, D.C., he married Jacqueline Landry, who survives.
Besides his wife Jackie, Doug is also survived by his son Kevin Hoag and his companion Betsy McCormack of South Plymouth; his grandchildren Amy Hoag and her companion Michael Polozzi of Norwich, Jonathan (Jennifer) Hoag of NC; his great grandson Connor Brian Hoag; and his daughter-in-law Pamela Hoag of Norwich. He is also survived by his brother Alan Hoag of Tampa, Fla. and several nieces and nephews.
Doug was predeceased by his son Brian Hoag and his sister Shirley Edwards.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Monday at 7:30 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date in the Riverview Cemetery of Oxford.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
