NORWICH – Alice Higley Gilbert died peacefully in her sleep on June 18, 2012.
Alice was born Feb. 6, 1926 in Norwich, the only child of Cyrus Martin Higley and Dorothy Lindley Higley. Alice attended the Norwich public schools, graduating from Norwich High School in 1944. She attended Swarthmore College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Psi in 1948, with degrees in mathematics and physics. Alice met Philip Gilbert in their freshman year at Swarthmore, and they were married the November following their graduation.
Alice worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York, where her career spanned banking, statistical analysis, and software design and optimization. She retired in 1992 and in 1998 they moved to the Crosslands Retirement Community in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
Following the couple’s move to Pennsylvania, they joined London Grove Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. Throughout her adult life, Alice served in a wide variety of roles in local, regional, and national Quaker groups.
Alice is survived by her husband of 64 years and their three children, Esther, Elizabeth, and Thomas; five grandchildren;one great grandchild; and one Siamese cat.
