OXFORD – Esther M. (Buckland) McGowan, 76, of State St., Oxford passed away on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012 at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
She was born on May 13, 1936 in Binghamton, a daughter of the late Julius and Edith (Hawk) Buckland. She married the late Cecil J. McGowan on Feb. 19, 1955.
She is survived by her children, Timothy McGowan and Connie Rowlison of Oxford, Cheryl McGowan and Rick DuBois of Oxford, Julie McGowan and John (Foxy) Souders of Unadilla, her brothers-in-law, Pete McGowan and Ken McGowan of Florida, Larry McGowan of Oxford, her sisters-in-law Elsie Dutcher of Oxford, Sylvia Buckland of Vestal and her grandson, Justin Boberg who is now serving in Afghanistan. As well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers, Clarence J., Kenneth P. and Bert O. Buckland.
Esther was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 376, Oxford, and the Oxford Fire Department Auxiliary where she was truly known as one of the best cooks ever, many people can attest to that. She retired from the Norwich Shoe Company after 30+ years. Esther was a loving mother, grandmother, and a great friend. In her younger years she cared for foster children in her home. She will truly be missed by her children and friends.
A memorial service was on Sunday, Sept. 16, upstairs at the American Legion Post 376, in Oxford at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Oxford Fire Department, PO Box 570, Oxford, NY 13830, or the American Legion Post 376, PO Box 217, Oxford, NY 13830.
