OXFORD – Former Oxford resident and businessman Derwin C. Barrows, passed away at his home in Mills River, N.C. on Dec. 10, 2012, at the age 92, after a brief illness.
He was a veteran of World War II and a life member of the American Legion. Following his discharge, he went to work for the former Borden Milk Plant in Norwich. He then moved his family to Homer, where he worked for the former Con-O-Lite Burial Vault Co. In 1963, he moved his family to Oxford, where he started the Chenango Valley Burial Vault Co. until his retirement. He then cut pulp wood for many years.
He is survived his wife of 38 years, Josephine Barrows of the home; his children: Leon (Jean) Barrows of McDonough, Linda (Doug) Preston of Smithville Flats, Ken (Bonnie) Brewer and Carl (Sheila) Brewer all of Hendersonville, N.C., Sandy (Don) Beckwith of Oxford, Richard (Becky) Barrows of Mills River, N.C., Cindy (Larry) Retallack of Grass Valley, Calif, John Barrows of Norwich, Lori (Ed) Hoag of Maryland, Larry (Rhonda) Barrows of Oxford, Jeff Barrows of Oxford, Linda (Jim) Jaycox, Steven (Lori) Webb all of Norwich, John (Mindy) Webb and William (Holly) Barrows all of Apalachin. Also may grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by wives Marion Hammerle and Grace Barrows; his parents Floyd and Bessie Bush Barrows; nine brothers and sisters; daughter Susan (Barrows) Lewis and nephew James (Homey) Barrows, and daughter Betty (Barrows) Wheelock.
A memorial service will be held at the Faith Bible Church at a later date.
