NORWICH – Charles R. (Charlie) Myers Sr., 90, a longtime Norwich resident, passed away early Thursday morning, Jan. 10, 2013, at the New York State Veterans’ Home of Oxford.
Charlie was born in Utica on Sept. 15, 1922, the son of John A. and Elizabeth Day Myers. He moved to the Norwich area at an early age and was a graduate of the Norwich High School. A veteran of World War II, Charlie served his country from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. A highly decorated veteran he was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Air Medal & Oak Leaf Cluster Large Bronze Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star Attachment and the Army Aviation Aircraft Crewman Badge. Following his service to his country, Charlie returned home to Norwich where he began a long time career with the Norwich Knitting Mill and its successor Champion Products working as a machinist, a career which would span a period of 43 years.
Throughout his life Charlie was an avid athlete. He enjoyed playing softball, football wrestling and water skiing. He could often be seen taking one of his many walks in the City of Norwich and was also an accomplished wood carver with some of his work being displayed in the Made In Chenango store. An avid outdoorsman, Charlie enjoyed his hunting, fishing and tying flies.
Charlie is survived by his children, Daniel M. Myers of Niverville, Catherine Eagan and husband Jeffrey of Tulsa, OK, Charles (Chuck) Myers Jr. and his wife Denise of Norwich and Janet Thompson also of Norwich, his sister Isabelle Call of Norwich, his brothers John Myers of Oxford and Oswald Myers and his wife Arietta of Beaver Meadow. Also surviving are his grandchildren Donald, Christopher, Heather, Matthew and Jessica along with several nieces and nephews.
Charlie was predeceased by his daughter Linda Huhta and his former wife Julia Currie Myers.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Charlie will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from St. Bartholomew’s Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Ralph A. Bove, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.
