SARAH “BECKY” OWENS
ONEONTA – Sarah F. “Becky” Owens, 81, of South Side Dr., formerly of Sherburne, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 13, 2013 after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born Sept. 7, 1931 in Sherburne, a daughter of Arthur F., Sr. and Emma F. Perkins Gould and received her education in Sherburne schools. Sarah married Albert Owens on February 5, 1949 who predeceased her on Jan. 6, 2011. Sarah, also affectionately known as Becky by many of her friends, retired from working in the school cafeteria at Sherburne-Earlville Central School. She was loved by many of the students, and was known for paying for lunches for those who needed it. Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Becky’s family was her greatest joy and she was active in caring for her sister, Mary.
Becky was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Sherburne where she assisted with the Thrift Shop and was a member of the Episcopal Women.
Surviving are her children, Laurie L. (Laura) and Patrick Hawkins of Oneonta; Albert T. “Tom,” Jr. and Terrie Owens of Valdese, NC; former daughter-in-law, Cherry (Owens) Lamb; grandchildren, Heather and Morgan Owens; Andy and Christopher Stone; Leon L. Lamb, Jr.; Charity and Les Burton; Kirsche K. Owens Spicer and husband David Spicer; Daniel Vranjes; several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are her sister, Mary Gould of Norwich; and brother, Jake Gould of Sherburne. She was predeceased by a son, Walter Jerry Owens; grandson, Kristian K. Owens; daughter-in-law, Susan Ferris Owens; three sisters and a brother.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday from the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Classic St., Sherburne.
Interment in the Sherburne Quarter Cemetery will be held in the spring.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Sunday from 1-2:30 p.m.
