Evelyn Pooler


NORWICH – Evelyn Pooler, 90, formerly of North State Street, Norwich, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 20, 2007 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenfield, Iowa, on Oct. 3, 1916, daughter of lrven and Pearle (Carter) Young, Evelyn grew up in Smyrna and attended Sherburne High School, from which she graduated in 1933. On Aug. 28, 1942, in Jacksonville, Fla., she married Paul L. Pooler, and devoted the early part of her married life to her home and family. Evelyn and Paul were founding members of the Norwich Band Parents and avid supporters of the Norwich High School Band. They had been residents of their North State Street home since 1952, and on March 27, 1952, Evelyn went to work for the Norwich Pharmacal Company. She was employed there for 28 years, became a member of their Quarter Century Service Club on March 27, 1977, and retired on March 30, 1980. Evelyn and Paul were avid campers and enjoyed traveling, spending many winters in Zephyrhills, Fla. She liked to read and sew; and while Paul raised a fantastic garden, Evelyn was the one to do the canning and freezing.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters: Laraine Lee and husband Mike of Norfolk, and Janis Ruhe and husband David of South Charleston, Ohio; by her grandchildren; Scott Robinson of Utica, Beth LaFirst and husband Chris of Syracuse, Jill Altaffer and husband Todd of Montpelier, Ohio, Katie Ruhe of Tampa, and Amy Rhue of South Charleston, Ohio. She is also survived by great grandchildren Blake and Jacee Altaffer; her sisters, Nellie Walker of Norwich and Thelma Burchard of Tucson, Ariz; and was predeceased by her husband Paul on Jan, 20, 2002; her sister, Miriam Shepardson, and brother Edwin K. Young.
Graveside services for Evelyn in Mt. Hope Cemetery will be held at a later date, to be announced. There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
