Vyrle Stilwell

PLYMOUTH – Vyrle “Doc” E. Stilwell, 90, formerly of Plymouth and Ocala Fla., passed away in Smithfield N.C. on Jan. 13, 2007.
Born on  Nov. 11, 1916, in Oneonta, he was the son of Bessie (Gifford) and George Stilwell. Doc was predeceased by his brother Ray of Oneonta and sister Frances Jenkins of Ocala, Fla. On Oct. 11, 1942 he married LaVonne “Bonnie” Beers, who preceded him in death in March 2006. He is survived by his daughter Sherry Persson, a granddaughter Mrs. Roger (Sandra) Olmstead and great granddaughter Grace Olmstead, all of Smithfield, N.C.
After his service in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, he owned and operated a school bus and Norwich Charter Bus service until 1954. At that time he began work for the Norwich Central Schools supervising the Norwich Central School bus service until his retirement in 1975. Doc’s service to the schools, the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department, and the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department over the years before their move to Florida in 1975 embodied his love of community, children and people. Finding he really wasn’t ready to retire in Florida for lack of “something to do,” he once again went to work, this time for the Central Florida Community College in Ocala and loved the interaction with kids and staff. For as long as they could, Doc and Bonnie traveled from Florida back to New York every summer with their travel trailer, visiting family and friends to reminisce and socialize. Health concerns  brought them to Virginia in 2002 to be near their daughter and in 2005 Doc, Bonnie and Sherry moved to Smithfield, N.C. to have four generations of family together.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local Alzheimer’s Association Chapter or the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Fl. 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601-7633. Interment will be in Ocala, Fla. at a later date. Arrangements with the Parrish Funeral Home of Selma, N.C.
