SMYRNA – David J. Bassett, 69, of County Road 20, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
He was born November 18, 1943 in Norwich a son of Lyman A. and Frieda Lindholm Bassett and was a graduate of Sherburne High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1961 and served until his honorable discharge in 1964. On December 7, 1968, David married Janice Mettler in Smyrna. David was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Smyrna for over 30 years, retiring in 2001.
David was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Smyrna. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #876 of Sherburne and the Smyrna Rod and Gun Club.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Janice; his children, Julie and Brian Paliana of Sherburne; Patti and Wayne Furner of Smyrna; Keith and Jonie Bassett of South New Berlin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy Bassett and Jim Law of Bainbridge; Linda and Kirk Mudge of Auburn; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Caroline Bassett of Agawam, MA; Clarence and Genie Bassett of Clifton Springs; five grandchildren, Tanner Bonsie, Sara Furner, Wayne Furner, Martin Furner and Adam Paliana; brother-in-law, Eugene (Darlene) Mettler, Kent, OH; Sisters-in-law, Margaret (Chuck) Hubbell, Clinton; Catherine (Bill) Johnson, Sherburne; Ruby Bassett, Smyrna; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert “Bob” Bassett in 2009; and brothers-in-law, William Mettler, Sr. and David Sanderson.
In keeping with David’s wishes there are no services or calling hours.
Interment will be in the Willcox Cemetery, Smyrna at the convenience of his family.
