SOUTH OTSELIC – Raymond W. Burt, 87, of South Otselic, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at his home, while surrounded by his family.
Ray was born in Cincinnatus, NY on April 21, 1925, a son of the late Lewis B. and Sarah Jane Snodgrass Burt. A lifelong resident of this area, he proudly served as a driver/mechanic for the U.S. Army 757 Tank Battalion during WWII. For several years, he and his father operated Burt’s Garage in S. Otselic. He was a 60-plus year member of the Perry Cook American Legion Post #973, South Otselic; a 59-year member of the South Otselic Fire Department; and a member of Otselic Valley #659 F&AM. In 1959, he was hired by the Otselic Valley Central School as a bus driver and mechanic and retired as the Transportation Supervisor in 1991. He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Knickerbocker Country Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Irene Moore Burt; and his children, Nancy (Steven) Will of Deansboro, Janice Burt-Ashton of North Pharsalia, Michael (Kimbel) Burt of New Orleans, LA, and Robert (Bridget) Burt of Whitesboro. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Kelly, Stephanie, Colin, Matthew, Tori, Michael and Theo; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Burt of Cincinnatus; a brother-in-law, Dick Woodmansee of Ashville, NC; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Lorraine Whitten and Beverly Woodmansee.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. April 23 at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, with Jeanne Angell officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in Valley View Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23 at the funeral home, with a Masonic Service scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Ray may be directed to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815, or the South Otselic Fire Department and Emergency Squad, 1577 State Highway 26, S.
