John Haltner


SOUTH NEW BERLIN – John Otto Haltner, 71, a local dairy farmer in South New Berlin, passed away on Friday, April 26 2013, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
John, son of Swiss immigrants Otto and Bertha Haltner, was born July 31st in Tallman, NY near his parents dairy farm in Monsey, NY.
John, a Vietnam veteran, was known by his bright smile and kind heart. In 1979, he moved to his dairy farm in South New Berlin, which he operated for over 33 years. He was also recognized as a certified master technician by Chevrolet and had earned several awards from them. For five years, he enjoyed his retirement job as a driver for Advanced Auto Parts. “Dad” will always be missed and remembered.
John loved his family and is survived by his wife Jeri of South New Berlin; son John A. Haltner and his wife, Diane and grandson John A. Haltner II and granddaughter Lillian Haltner, of Monsey; son Robert Haltner and his wife Brenda, grandson Robert Haltner, and granddaughter Kala M. Haltner, currently of Santa Cruz, CA; his daughter Dawn Allen and husband Jeff of Fair Oaks, CA; and his sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Bob Horan of Upper Nyack, NY.
John’s family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Wilson Funeral Home. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery in White Store.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Chenango County SPCA, where he found his dog Barney, or to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad.
