Antony Walters Jr.


NORWICH – Anthony J. “Tony” Walters Jr., long-time resident of Berry Street, Norwich, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 2007 in the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital, where he had resided for several months.
Tony was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., on Feb. 26, 1927, the son of Anthony J. and Rose (Knasick) Walters Sr. He lived in the Wilkes Barre area throughout his childhood, attending and graduating from the local high school before going to college to study TV and radio repair. Tony did repairs to televisions and radios for many years, including the time prior to his entry into the Army. He served his country from April of 1945 through his honorable discharge in May of 1947, and during his service he was a high speed radio operator skilled in Morse Code. On Aug. 5, 1950, in Wilkes Barre, he married Claire Postupalski, and they relocated to Norwich, where Tony took employment on Sept. 25, 1950 with the Norwich Pharmacal Company. Working in the Pill and Tablet Department at the North Norwich facility, Tony’s job was to operate the machine that pressed the pills. He became a member of the company’s Quarter Century Service Club on Sept. 25, 1975, and retired from the company’s successor, Procter & Gamble, on Oct. 31, 1989 after 39 years of service.
Tony is survived by his children: Linda McGrath and husband Wendell of Greene, Theodore “Ted” Walters of Norwich, and Teresa Walters and husband Joe Webber of Norwich; by his grandchildren: Felice Hilker and husband Michael, Erin Carter and husband Matthew, Sara LaFave, Meako LaFave and companion Joe Beauleiu, and Lisa Walters; and by great grandchildren: Lucy Rene Hilker, Audra Lindsey Hilker, and Rachel Ann Beauleiu. He was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Claire Walters, on Jan. 5, 2003; and by his sister and brothers: Silvia Heiser, John Walters, and Henry Walters.
Graveside funeral services for Tony will be held in the spring, at a time to be announced. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
