NORWICH – Louise W. Spencer died on July 8 at Crestwood Center in Milford, NH at the age of 92. She was born April 2, 1921 in Dormont, PA, the only child of Elmer and Emma Wible.
Mrs. Spencer graduated from Mt. Lebanon (PA) High School in 1938. She attended Penn State University from 1938-1940, and graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Chemistry in 1942. While attending the University of Michigan, she met Claude F. Spencer, who she married on September 2, 1944.
Louise and Claude eventually settled in Norwich, NY where they raised their three children. Mrs. Spencer furthered her education with Master’s Degrees in Education and Learning Disabilities, and taught 6th grade elementary school from 1963 to 1970. She subsequently became a Student Teacher Supervisor for the State University of New York at Oneonta, where she held that position until 1977. Mrs. Spencer was also active in church and professional organizations.
After retiring from teaching, Mrs. Spencer enjoyed quilting, spending time with friends and family, and traveling throughout Europe with her husband. They moved to Mt. Desert, Maine in 1985, and moved to Merrimack, NH in 2004 to be near their son.
Mrs. Spencer is predeceased by her eldest son, Frederic A. Spencer, who died in 1973. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Claude; her daughter, Karen Maiurano and her husband, John, of Greenwich, NY; her son Richard and his wife, Robin, of Merrimack, NH; four grandchildren, Jay Maiurano and his wife, Audrey, of Burke, VA, Ryan Spencer of Jolon, CA, Caitlin and Daniel Spencer of Merrimack, and two great-grandsons, Alex and Joshua Maiurano.
A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Louise’s name be made to your local public library.
