SHERBURNE – Louiean Bingham Covell, of Bingham Rd., passed away Monday, August 19, 2013 at her home, one month before her 105th birthday.
She was born September 19, 1908 in Sherburne, the daughter of Albert J. and Jeannette Hayes Bingham. She attended local schools, graduating from Sherburne High School, Norwich Teachers Training Class, and from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1936. She taught elementary grades at the Guilford Central School for three years, North Norwich Elementary School for three years, and for 27 years was a fourth grade teacher in the Sherburne Central School System. On July 20, 1939, Louiean married Robert L. Covell in Sherburne. Together, they operated the Al-Jen Pony Farm. Robert predeceased her on October 13, 1992. Following her retirement from teaching in 1971, Mrs. Covell devoted her time to her hobbies, the breeding and showing of ponies; and art, working in water colors, oils, pen and ink.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Sherburne for over 85 years, and had served that church as a member of the choir, Sunday school teacher, historian, and a member of the Christian Education Committee. She was also a member of the Sherburne Chapter 631 Order of Eastern Star; the Sherburne Art Society; New York Teachers Association; National Retired Teachers Association; Chenango County Retired Teachers Association; and had served as president of the Sherburne-Earlville Teachers Association. She was also instrumental in the creation of the Sherburne Christmas crèche scene. She was a member of the American Shetland Pony Club and the National Pony Club of America.
She is survived by a foster-daughter, Virginia Constable of Goose Creek, SC; two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. A sister, Marjorie Chase, predeceased her in 2005.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013 from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, followed by interment in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.
Friends are invited to call from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
