Homer Smith


EAST McDONOUGH – Homer D. Smith, 68 of East McDonough passed away on Sept. 12, 2013 at Albany Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born on June 20, 1945 in Vestal, NY a son of the late Clarence and Ruth (Nightengale) Smith. On June 21, 1986 he married Michele Michaud, who survives.
Besides his wife, Michele, he is survived by his children, Paula Smith Nelson of Oxford, Brian Smith of Corning, and William Granger of Oxford; his grandchildren, Jenna Nelson, Trevor Nelson, Keegan Smith, Chase Smith and Bryn Smith; his sister and brother in law, Shirley and James Kenyon, of Oxford; and his brothers in law and sisters in law, William Michaud, Clifford (Larry) and Diane Michaud, David and Kit Michaud, and Michael and Lisa Michaud. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by his brothers, Keith, William and Clarence Jr., and his sister, June Jensen.
Homer was a graduate of Oxford Academy and Central School, where he was a member of the Football and Wrestling teams. He was an Iron Worker for Local #60 until his retirement in 1986. In 1987 he purchased The Outpost in East McDonough, where “The Homer Burger” became famous, and enjoyed cooking and putting on Holiday dinners. He also built the ice cream stand at The Outpost prior to retiring in 2009. He served McDonough in many roles, Town Justice, Councilman, and Supervisor for six years. He also served on the McDonough Fire Department and Emergency Squad. He was a huge fan of his grandchildren’s sports teams. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, antiques and woodworking.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2013 in Union Cemetery, McDonough. Memorial contributions may be made to one’s favorite charity.
