John H. Miller, 69, of Greene, passed away on September 22, 2013 at Chenango Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
John was born on September 30, 1943 in Long Beach CA. John was predeceased by his parents, Barbara and Rex Miller. He is survived by two brothers and families, Byron, Marcia, nephew Sean and niece Rachel of Greene and James of Fletcher NC, niece Jennifer and great-nephews of FLA. He is also survived by three aunts: Aunt Stella, Aunt Lois and Aunt Betty. John was like an uncle to Danny, Matt, Casey and Mark.
John was a 1961 graduate of Cortland High School where he played varsity sports. After graduation he joined the US Navy serving on the USS Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam War. After his discharge from the Navy he owned and operated the Hitching Rail Bar & Restaurant with his parents in Cortland, NY. He experienced many careers, body shop assistant, construction, electrical service, travel agent and finally a truck driver. John loved to travel, seeing Australia, most of Europe and Asia. This love of travel brought him to his last career as a long distance truck driver from which he retired in 2006 when he made Greene his home to be near Byron and his family. He lived at Plymouth Reservoir for many years where he spent his free time fishing and reading. He made many friends and touched many lives throughout his life and will be missed by all that knew and loved him. He’s taken a part of our hearts with him.
Byron and Marcia would like to thank the staff at Chenango Memorial Hospital ICU and the second floor where they lovingly cared for John, and to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County who made sure John was comfortable.Those wishing to remember John please do so with a donation to Chenango County SPCA, 6160 county Road 32, Norwich, NY 13815. Private burial will be held in Cortland Rural Cemetery, Cortland, NY. Arrangements are by Root Funeral Home in Greene and condolences may be sent to the family at www.rootfh.com.
