OXFORD – Grant Montgomery Gustin, 82, formerly of Oxford, passed away at Heartlands Senior Living Village on Feb. 17, 2007 of leukemia.
He was born on Nov. 5, 1924 in Troy, Pa., the son of the late Harold and Isadore Montgomery Gustin. On June 19, 1948, he married Helen Elizabeth McGill, in Fort Washington, Pa., who survives.
He is also survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: Steven and Nancy of Roswell, Ga.; Michael and Joanne of Wilmington, Mass.; Jeffrey and Sharon of Catonsville, Md.; David and Brenda of Ellicott City, Md. along with 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Zetterlind of Warren, Pa., and a niece and nephew.
Grant attended Warren High School and entered the Army Air Corps in March 1944. He served as a cryptographer in Trinidad and British Guinea as part of the 155th Army Airways Communication System Squadron. He was honorably discharged in April 1946 as a Staff Sargeant.
He graduated from Penn State with a BS in Chemistry in June, 1950. After working for Sharpe & Dohme and the Celanese Corp, Grant worked for Norwich Eaton Pharmaceutical Company as a Senior Research Chemist starting in 1960 until his retirement in 1989.
Grant served on several Chemical Society and Symposium committees, including the editorial committee of the American Microchemical Journal. He was member and past chairman of the American Microchemical Society, a member of the United Church of Oxford for 45 years; member and past president of the Oxford Rotary Club and Oxford Historical Society, and a member of the Norwich-Eaton Quarter-Century Club.
After his retirement, Grant continued to enjoy computers, beekeeping and gardening, and pursued new interests including morning walks to coffee club, genealogy, travel, and writing his memoirs.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. at Heartlands Village Chapel in Ellicott City. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Troy, Pa.
