Donald M. “grumpy” Parsons


SHERBURNE: Donald M. “Grumpy” Parsons, 83, of Knapp Rd., passed away Monday, April 2, 2007 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
He was born May 9, 1923 in Norwich, a son of Miles and Pearl Oliver Parsons and received his education in local schools. He left school and joined the Air Force in 1943 serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. On July 25, 1944, Don was united in marriage to Anna Barley in Sherburne. A lifelong Sherburne resident, Don began his career in trucking at the age of 17 when he started driving a coal truck for Palmiter’s in Sherburne. He later drove for several area companies including Standard Brands, Minute Maid, Delaware Hide and Rendering and Dairylea. He was also a bus driver for Greyhound and the Sherburne-Earlville Central School. He later worked in construction for D.W. Winkleman and D.A. Collins until his retirement.
Don was a member of the Teamsters Union Local #182 of Utica; the V.F.W. Post #2782 of Norwich; and was a life member of the American Legion Post #876 of Sherburne. He enjoyed camping and loved spending time with his family.
Surviving are Anna, his wife of 63 years; his children, Barbara (Roy) Pierce, Linda (Charlie) Giordano, all of Sherburne; David (Suk Cha) Parsons of Norwich; Kathy (George “Corky”) Martone of Endwell; Kevin (Patsy) Parsons of Sherburne; Lisa (Patrick) Darling of Norwich; his stepmother, Hilda Parsons of Ilion; grandchildren, Allen (Yvette) Pierce, Kristen Boice, Jennifer Giordano, Charles “Chuck” Giordano, Un Hui (Richard) Cheung, Linda Ann (Nathan) Reese, David (Deanna) Parsons, Jr., Ashley Martone, Sara Parsons, Joshua Parsons, Jacob Parsons, Kaitlyn Darling, Bradley Darling; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Robert and Edward Parsons, and his in-laws, Jacob and Elsie Barley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, April 5, from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
Burial in the Sherburne Quarter Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday (today) from 2-4 and 6-9 PM.
