SHERBURNE – Walter Burdick, formally of Sherburne, died Wednesday July 18, 2007, in The Woodside Hospice House in Pinellas Park Florida. He was surrounded by many friends and family members from New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida.
Walt was born on May 26, 1951 in Syracuse, to Walter and Joy (Hicks) Burdick. When he was 10 his family moved to North Norwich where he graduated from Sherburne-Earlville High School in the Class of 1969.
He is survived by a daughter, Korrine and son Justin of Clearwater Florida and a son David of Binghamton; two sisters, Karen Rush and Alice Newman of Sherburne; three nieces, Joanne Briggs, Robin Babcock and Mary Gibbs; two nephews, Edward and Thomas Newman and several grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father and mother and his brother David.
In addition to his devotion to family and friends, Walt will be remembered for his passion for music. As the drummer for local bands like “STRUT” in the 1970s; “Bag of Bones” in the 1990s and most recently “STRANDED,” he was influential in determining the bands style. To many, Walt will always be “The Leader of the Band.” In addition to playing in Chenango County, Walt’s bands played in the Binghamton, Syracuse and Oneonta areas.
After high school Walt joined his father’s business distributing dairy products for H.P. Hood in the Utica area. In the early 1980s he moved to Florida to sell insurance, returning to New York to work for Giufre and Sons Inc. and Agway procuring produce for major food chains like P&C; Price Chopper and Kroger. His career spanned 20 + years and allowed him to travel throughout the U.S. and South America.
There will be a remembrance of Walt’s life Sunday July 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mountain Top Golf Course in Sherburne, NY. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to remember Walter can make contributions to Hospice House Woodside, 6670 102nd Ave. N in Pinellas Park Florida.
