NORWICH – Peg Slater Laden, 82, of State Highway 12 South, Norwich, passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 12, 2007, in Lourdes Hospital of Binghamton.
The daughter of Merwin and Olive (Peckham) Neish, Peg was born in Norwich in 1924. While still attending Norwich High School, she began her working years as an operator for the C&U Telephone Corporation. An active and energetic lady all her life, Peg left the phone company shortly after finishing school and worked for 5-6 years as a secretary for Bendix Corporation in Sidney. She was next employed by Sheffield Chemical for 20 years, until they moved their headquarters to New Jersey, and Peg went to work for Simmonds Precision (GLA), from which she retired in 1986 as secretary to the Quality Control Manager, having been with the firm for over 20 years.
On Aug. 31, 1944, in Norwich, Peg married Robert J. Slater, who would be her husband for 33 years prior to his passing. Peg loved to bake and was known for her lovely wedding cakes. She was an avid and talented bowler who belonged to several Norwich leagues and was a member of the Norwich Bowling Hall of Fame. She became a member of the National 600 Bowling Group in 1974. Peg was a former member of the Norwich Eastern Star and the Women of the Moose; a charter member and co-founder of the Ladies of the Elks; and a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church.
On April 4, 1981, in the Broad St. United Methodist Church in Norwich, Peg married her second husband, William J. “Bill” Laden. They enjoyed traveling together, including winters in Florida until Peg’s health curtailed that activity.
Peg is survived by her husband, William J. “Bill” Laden of Norwich; her daughter, Sharon Fleming and husband Dick of Norwich; by her sisters: Barbara Doyle of Binghamton, and Joyce Handy and husband Robert of Norwich; her grandchildren, Rick Fleming and wife Michelle of Norwich and Thad Fleming of Syracuse; and great grandchildren Kyle, Kalie, Zachery, and Dylan. She is also survived by her step-children: Jeanette Murphy, Frank Laden, Joanne Prosser, Patty Laden, William Laden, Jr., and Sherry Mudge and husband Dale, all of Norwich; and several step-grandchildren. Peg was predeceased by her parents, Merwin and Olive; her step-mother, Iola Angel Neish; and her first husband, Robert J. Slater, on Aug. 20, 1975 .
Funeral services for Peg will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Tom Taylor of Norwich, retired Methodist clergy, will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from noon until the service at 2 p.m.
Peg’s family has asked that memorial contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.
