NORWICH – Nelson B. Tiffany, 79, a resident of Parkhouse Apartments, Norwich, went to meet his Lord on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007 at his residence.
He was born Nelson Brown Tiffany on April 16, 1928 in Norwich, the son of William and Beulah (Brown) Tiffany. He grew up on the Tiffany farm located one mile north of Norwich on Route 12. He attended a one room rural school located in Woods Corners, followed by a high school education and Norwich High School on West Main Street, graduating with the Class of 1944.
On Aug. 21, 1944, he went to work as the messenger boy for the then, “Norwich Pharmacal Company.” During his employment he held various titles including Supervisor, Assistant General Office Manager and Manager of Systems and Procedures. He took early retirement at age 55 on May 31, 1983 after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Quarter-Century Club.
On Feb. 12, 1949, at the First Baptist Church in Norwich, Nelson married Patricia Dawn Bryant, a daughter of Marion and Beulah (Hart) Bryant. The couple has resided in the vicinity of Norwich all of their lives, living in two homes which were primarily constructed by Nelson.
His activities as a former member of the First Baptist Church had included head usher, Sunday School Superintendent and Church Treasurer.
Nelson had been heavily involved with local bowling activities, having been a member of various bowling teams, served on the tournament committee, a past president of the association and was a member of the Norwich Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Nelson was elected to the Norwich School Board and served during the planning for a new high school which now sits in its present location on the old railroad yards.
He was very involved with genealogy, having identified over 300 of his grandparents. These included 17 grandfathers who served in the Revolutionary War and a set of grandparents who came over on the Mayflower. His fourth great grandfather, Humphrey Tiffany, was one of the early pioneers who came to the Town of New Berlin. Nelson’s work has included the collection of a significant amount of “Tiffany” family data which was to be used to publish a family genealogy.
He loved to hunt and was a participant in group hunting trips to the Adirondack Mountains nearly every year for over 40 years.
During his retirement, Nelson spent time collecting historical material for the Chenango Historical Society. He was responsible for the publication of a four volume set of books titled, “Revolutionary War Veterans of Chenango County.” Much more data has been assembled for additional publications covering War of 1812 veterans and Chenango County’s early pioneers. He has served as a trustee for the Chenango County Historical Society.
Other volunteer work has included being in charge, along with his wife, of the PTA Food Booth at Norwich High School football games, an association with the Norwich Kiwanis Club and delivery of 60+ dinners.
He was predeceased by his father, William Tiffany on February 9, 1973, his mother, B. Winifred Tiffany on Oct. 15, 1996 and a daughter, Elise Ward on May 21, 1997.
