PLYMOUTH – Daisy Eva (Carpenter) Mathewson, 90, of Humboldt, Kansas, and formerly of Plymouth, died at 9:51 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, 2007 at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, Kansas.
The seventh of eight children. Daisy was born on March 12, 1917, in Smithville, New York, the daughter of John and Nina (Northrup) Carpenter. On March 18, 1936, she married Robert D. Mathewson of North Norwich. She was employed by Norwich Knitting Mills, Norwich Shoe Company, Sagecraft and Gladding Corporation but most of the time she was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She and Robert made homes in Oxford, Greene, Norwich, Plymouth and finally Humboldt, Kansas.
A life-long dream of her husband was to live in the Midwest and after retirement, they relocated to and both fell in love with the community of Humboldt and its residents. She was actively involved with the United Methodist Church in Humboldt, where she enjoyed the fellowship and using her creative talents in sewing, arts, and crafts. She was always an active bowler and participated in several bowling leagues in the Norwich area. Throughout her retirement, she always made time to volunteer at the senior center and Pine Crest Nursing Home making sure that there were fun things for the residents to do. She always stated, “Someone needs to take care of the old people.”
Although Robert preceded her in death in 1993, she still remained active within the community and continued to give unconditionally of her self through her creative talents and sharp wit.
She was predeceased by her sisters Anna, Nina and Nora and her brothers Harry, Fred, John and Esper. Daisy is survived by her five children: David (Beth) Mathewson of Iola, Kan., Joan Law of Humboldt, Kan., Phyllis (Edward) Law of Norwich, Robert Michael Mathewson of Norwich, and Kathy Mathewson of Brevard, Fla. She is also survived by her Sister-in-Law, Luella Carpenter of Norwich. She had 10 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren with another on the way, and many nieces and nephews who will all miss her immensely.
Daisy will always be remembered for her smile, friendliness, humanity and devotion to family. Even in the hardest of times or through the most difficult events, she would always find a way to break through and make those around her smile. Those who were fortunate enough to be graced with her friendship and love can always be grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of her life. Her most significant gift is the legacy of family that she has left behind to cherish her memory.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday. Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home in Norwich. Pastor Bruce Braswell will officiate.
The family asks that contributions be made either to local Hospice agencies, the American Heart Association, or the American Kidney Foundation.
