Martin Bush


NORWICH – Martin C. Bush, 79, of Bloomfield, Conn., died Nov. 20, 2007 after a long illness. 
Born April 6, 1928 in Norwich, New York, to Estella (Coy) and Clifford Bush of Sidney, Martin attended SUNY at Albany where he received his B.A. and M.A. in English Literature.
Martin lived for over forty years in the Hartford area, serving as a teacher, English Chairman, and Vice Principal in the Avon and Hartford Public Schools.  Well known for his community theatre productions, which staged Broadway musicals in the Hartford area throughout the 1970’s, Marty helped found the West End Arts Council and the West End Civic Association.  A tireless teacher of the English language and its literature, after his retirement he served as an adjunct professor at the Univ. of Hartford.  In addition, Marty was active in the Bloomfield Historical Society, served on the Town Council of Bloomfield, served as Chairman of the Board of Education in Bloomfield, and was an active member of the Bloomfield Democratic Town Committee.  He was a Deacon in the Bloomfield Congregational Church.  Marty was also known for his love of opera, his spectacular cooking and entertaining, and his wide circle of friends.
Martin is survived by his partner of 30 years, Paul Pelletier, of Bloomfield; a son, Adam Bush of Woodstock; two daughters: Kate Evans-Bush of London, England; and Hurley Anne (Leigh) Kenyon of Hartford; four grandsons (Daniel, Peter, Emil and Nat), three granddaughters (Maggie, Katya and Daisy); a great-grandson (Xander); his ex-wife, Nancy Evans-Bush; an uncle, Leon Coy of Wilmington, Del.; and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the Bloomfield Congregational Church, Bloomfield, Conn., at 2 p.m. on Saturday with a reception to follow. 
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marty’s name to the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford, 30 Arbor Street, Hartford, CT  06106, or to The Connecticut Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.
