Born on March 13, 1926 to Lillian (Lawton) and Frank Brewer, Ward attended Norwich schools. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. During his life, Ward was a partner in the Consumer Coal company in Norwich. Later, he was involved in many highway expansion projects of the 1950's and 60's as a heavy equipment operator.
