NORWICH – Mary Newcomb, 92, life-long Norwich resident, passed away early Thursday morning, Dec. 30, 2010, in the Wilson Memorial Hospital of Johnson City.
Born to Harold and Louise Tuttle Keeler on Feb. 12, 1918, Mary grew up in Norwich and was a 1936 graduate of the Norwich High School. She married Clarence H. Newcomb, the son of Charles and Rose Newcomb, in Norwich on June 16, 1940. They had been married for 46 years when he predeceased her on Nov. 20, 1986.

OXFORD – Eleanor Jane “Ellis” Charles, 78, of Oxford, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 1, 2010, in the Valley View Manor Nursing Home.
Born in Greene Jan. 5, 1932, Ellie was the daughter of LaVerne and Jane Brown Leach. While growing up in the Brisben area, she attended the Greene Schools, from which she graduated. On March 5, 1955, in Brisben, she married Richard Charles. Ellie lived a good portion of her adult life in Norwich, moving to Oxford with her family in 1971. He was predeceased by his father, Donald; stepfather Ivan and by a brother Ernest. He is survived by two daughters, Tishena Parry and Naomi Gross; four grandchildren, Nathanial and Natalie Parry, Acacia Gross and Eron Button and many other family.

SOUTH PLYMOUTH – George Bump, known as “Nighthawk,” 75, of South Plymouth, passed away unexpectedly early Thursday morning, Nov. 25, 2010, at his home.

NORWICH – Elizabeth “Betty” Powell, 87, long-time Norwich resident, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, Nov. 30, 2010, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
Born in Auburn in August of 1923, Betty was the daughter of Harry and Edna Corwin Turnbull. She worked for a time in the concession stand at Smalley’s Theatre in Norwich, and later was employed by McLaughlin’s Department Store. CORTLAND – Jeanette A. Nelson, 69, of Cortland, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at her home, while surrounded by her family.
Jeanette was born in German on Nov. 2, 1941, a daughter of Harold and Maude Dunn Nelson. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Cortland, and dearly loved her church family.
